Best Instagram Comment-to-DM Tools

A comment-to-DM tool sends an automatic DM, usually with a link, when someone comments your keyword on an Instagram post or Reel, and posts a public reply so they know to check their inbox. For a fixed price, DMPilot does this for $9 a month flat; Reachlee, LinkDM, InstantDM and CreatorFlow have free plans with monthly DM caps; ManyChat and Chatfuel handle it inside larger platforms from $17 and $18 a month (prices as of October 2026). Pick on what the bill grows with and whether link tracking is included.

How comment-to-DM works

You publish a post or Reel and invite people to comment a word. When someone comments, the Instagram API notifies your automation tool, and the tool sends that person a private reply in DMs. Most tools also post a public reply under the comment at the same time, which tells the commenter to check their inbox and adds visible engagement to the post.

Two rules govern the whole pattern. First, Instagram allows exactly one private reply per comment, so the DM you send in reply to a comment has to do the job on its own. Second, the private reply has to go out within 7 days of the comment, and further messages are only possible once the person replies, inside the 24-hour window their reply opens. Good tools handle both automatically and add per-contact cooldowns so a person who comments five times is not messaged five times.

You need a Professional (Business or Creator) Instagram account, and the tool needs to connect through the official API. Read the comment-to-DM use case for the mechanics in more detail, or how to set up comment to DM for the steps.

What separates a good comment-to-DM tool from a basic one

The differences show up in what happens around the send, and several of them are paid-only on free plans.

  • Trigger precision: exact keyword or keyword anywhere in the comment, on one post or all posts
  • A paired public comment reply, so the commenter knows to check DMs
  • Whether the DM can carry a link button rather than a bare URL
  • Tracked links with click counts and click-through rate, so you measure outcomes rather than sends
  • Email capture inside the DM thread, with consent text, for follow-up outside Instagram
  • A follow ask before the link, and a reminder when the link is not tapped
  • Safety rails: per-contact cooldowns and retries when Instagram rate-limits a send

DMPilot: best for one keyword and one link at a fixed price

DMPilot is our tool, and comment-to-DM is what it was built around. You choose one post or all posts and a keyword (an exact word or a word anywhere in the comment); when someone comments it, DMPilot posts a public reply under the comment and sends a DM with your message and a link button. The link is a tracked short link with clicks and click-through rate. You can ask for a follow inside the DM first; the paid plan adds an email ask with your consent text and one reminder if the link is not tapped. It runs on Meta's official Instagram API via an approved tech provider and sends one link DM per person, per automation, per day. It is free for up to 100 people a month with no card, then $9 a month or $81 a year, flat. There is no visual flow builder, no WhatsApp or Messenger, no agency workspaces and no product carousels.

ManyChat: best when the DM starts a longer flow

ManyChat treats comment-to-DM as one step in a visual flow. You can branch on what the person replies, tag them and reuse the flow across Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. Its Free plan allows 4 live automations and 25 active contacts a month; paid plans run from $17 to $199 a month and are billed by active contacts, the people you message each month, so a comment-to-DM that performs raises that month's bill. See DMPilot vs ManyChat and ManyChat pricing.

Chatfuel: best for stores that want AI in the thread

Chatfuel is an AI chatbot platform for WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, including automatic replies to post and Reel comments. Business is $18 a month billed yearly, with a free trial and AI replies under a fair-use allowance. For a store running "comment SIZE for the fit guide", the commerce side earns its place; for a creator running "comment LINK", most of it sits unused. Compare it with DMPilot.

Reachlee: best for starting free

Reachlee's free plan covers 1,000 DMs a month with comment, story and DM triggers and click tracking. Pro ($9 a month) adds the follow gate and follow-up reminders, and Growth ($14) adds AI replies to comments and DMs. See DMPilot vs Reachlee.

LinkDM: best for several accounts

LinkDM is named after the pattern it serves: someone comments, they get a link. The free plan covers one account and up to 1,000 DMs a month; Pro, at $19 a month, covers up to 3 accounts and adds comment auto-replies and reminder DMs. See InstantDM vs LinkDM if those two are your shortlist.

InstantDM: best for a free start with a cheap upgrade

InstantDM's free plan allows 500 DM automations a month on up to 5 posts with 3 trigger words. Paid single-account plans start at $9.99 a month billed yearly, with no per-contact fees and a 7-day trial. See DMPilot vs InstantDM.

CreatorFlow: best for creators with several accounts

CreatorFlow's free plan covers comment-to-DM and story replies on one account, up to 500 DMs a month, but without email collection or link click tracking. Pro is $15 a month ($12 billed yearly) for 2 accounts and adds both. See CreatorFlow alternatives.

Inro: best for DM campaigns

Inro's free plan covers 100 active contacts and 3 automations a month. Pro starts at €12.99 a month and is metered by active contacts, so a viral post raises the bill. See Inro alternatives.

ReplyRush: best for DM volume on a budget

ReplyRush prices on DM volume, from a free plan of 1,500 DMs a month to Lite at $10 for 7,500. Note that comment auto-reply is not on the free plan, so a comment-to-DM setup needs a paid tier. See ReplyRush alternatives.

Staying compliant while a post takes off

The risk with comment-to-DM is not the automation itself, it is volume. A Reel that outperforms can bring thousands of comments in an hour, and each one is a message your tool wants to send. Instagram enforces rate limits, and a tool that ignores them turns a working automation into a delivery problem.

This is why per-contact cooldowns and rate-limit handling matter more than they sound. A cooldown stops the same person receiving repeated messages when they comment several times; backing off and retrying when Instagram pushes back keeps sends going during a spike. Ask about both before you choose a tool, because they are rarely on the front of a marketing page.

The other constraint is time. If someone comments overnight and you plan to answer by hand, you may not get to it before they lose interest, and your one private reply has to go out within 7 days. Automations that respond immediately use that window better than anything you do by hand, which is most of the argument for automating this at all.

Picking one

If comment-to-DM is one step in a longer conversation you want to design, use ManyChat. If your DMs are part of a store and you want AI in the thread, look at Chatfuel. If comment-to-DM is the whole job and you want it live today with click tracking on the link, an Instagram-only tool will serve you better and cost less: DMPilot free for 100 people a month and then a flat $9, or a free plan from Reachlee, LinkDM, InstantDM or CreatorFlow if you want to test at zero cost first. Try two of them on the same post and compare the click-through rate, not the send count.

Frequently asked questions

What is a comment-to-DM tool?

It is software that watches your Instagram comments and automatically sends a direct message to anyone who comments your keyword. Most tools also post a public reply under the comment at the same time.

Does comment-to-DM automation break Instagram rules?

No, provided the tool uses Meta's official Instagram API. Instagram supports private replies to comments, allows one private reply per comment, and requires it to be sent within 7 days of the comment.

Can I send more than one DM per comment?

No. Instagram allows exactly one private reply per comment. You can send further messages only if the person replies to you, and only inside the 24-hour window that their reply opens.

Do I need a keyword, or can any comment trigger a DM?

It depends on the tool. Some platforms can fire on every comment; DMPilot always needs a keyword, matched either as the exact comment or as a word anywhere in it, which keeps DMs to people who asked. Keyword triggers usually convert better because the comment itself signals intent.

What is the cheapest comment-to-DM tool?

As of October 2026, DMPilot, Reachlee, LinkDM, InstantDM and CreatorFlow have free plans with monthly caps. Among paid plans, DMPilot is $9 a month flat and Reachlee Pro is $9 a month; ManyChat starts at $17 a month.

How do I know if my comment-to-DM automation is working?

Measure link clicks and click-through rate rather than the number of DMs sent. A tool with tracked short links reports both, which tells you whether the message earned the click.

Can comment-to-DM collect email addresses?

Some tools can ask for an email inside the DM thread and store it with consent text, which lets you follow up outside Instagram. Check that the tool records consent, and that email capture is on the plan you are paying for.
