ManyChat vs Chatfuel: an even-handed comparison

Pick ManyChat for Instagram-first automation with a visual flow builder, the largest template ecosystem and channels from Instagram to TikTok; pick Chatfuel if you sell through WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook and want AI to run the conversation. As of October 2026, ManyChat's paid plans run from $17 a month (250 active contacts) to $199, billed by the people you message each month, while Chatfuel's Business plan is $18 a month billed yearly, with unlimited active contacts and AI under a fair-use allowance. If you only need Instagram comment-to-DM, a flat $9 tool such as DMPilot is simpler than either.

What each tool is

ManyChat is a chat-marketing platform built around a visual flow builder. You drag nodes onto a canvas, connect triggers to messages, and branch the conversation based on what the person taps or types. It covers Instagram, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, TikTok and more, and it has a large library of templates, integrations and community-made walkthroughs. That ecosystem is a real part of the value: if you get stuck, someone has usually published a flow that looks like the one you are trying to build.

Chatfuel now presents itself as an AI chatbot platform for WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook. Its Business plan lists features aimed at selling: lead scoring, in-chat sales, meeting booking, CRM sync, bulk WhatsApp campaigns and sending conversions to the Meta Pixel. Where ManyChat started from Instagram creators, Chatfuel's centre of gravity is a business answering and selling in chat, with AI doing more of the talking.

The important thing to hold onto is that these two are the same species of product. Neither is a lightweight utility. Both expect you to spend real time configuring conversations before anything goes live. If that already sounds heavier than what you need, the deciding question is not ManyChat versus Chatfuel at all, and the section near the end on a simpler third option is the one worth reading.

Setup and learning curve

Both platforms start the same way. You connect a Professional (Business or Creator) Instagram account, grant permissions through Meta, and then build. The connection itself is quick on either tool. What takes longer is the build: a flow builder is a small authoring environment, and the first time you open one you are learning nodes, conditions, tags, delays and testing at the same time as you are trying to write a message.

For a first working automation, budget an afternoon rather than a coffee break on either platform. ManyChat softens this with templates you can import and edit, which is genuinely useful if your use case is common. Chatfuel leans on AI to handle more of the conversation, which shortens the build but means you need to check what the AI says on your behalf. In both cases you still need to understand the tool well enough to change it, because a template that half-fits is often harder to fix than a flow you built yourself.

The learning curve pays off when your conversations actually branch. If you want to ask a qualifying question, route buyers one way and browsers another, tag people by answer and follow up differently, a platform like these is the right shape of tool and the hours are well spent. If your automation is one keyword and one reply, you are paying that learning cost for structure you will never use.

Feature differences that actually matter

Feature tables between these two get long and mostly cancel out. The differences that change a buying decision are narrower than the marketing suggests.

  • Ecosystem: ManyChat has the larger template, agency and integration ecosystem, which shortens the path from idea to working flow.
  • Selling and AI: Chatfuel puts AI-led sales conversations, lead scoring and booking front and centre; ManyChat offers AI on Pro and above but is more general-purpose.
  • Channels: ManyChat covers more channels, including TikTok, Telegram, SMS and email; Chatfuel focuses on WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook.
  • Instagram depth: ManyChat lists Instagram-specific triggers such as story mentions, Live comments and new followers; check whether Chatfuel covers the ones you need.
  • Team and agency use: both offer agency tiers; check seat counts on the plan you are considering.

Where they are genuinely similar

Automatic replies to Instagram comments, keyword triggers and team inboxes exist on both, as do integrations with the usual CRM tools. If your shortlist is only these two and your use case is standard Instagram lead capture, you can build it on either, and the decision comes down to price at your volume and which tool you find easier to think in.

Where you should check rather than assume

Both vendors move features between plan tiers. A capability that appears in a comparison article may sit on a higher tier than the price you were quoted. Before committing, open each pricing page, find the exact tier that includes the feature you care about, and price that tier at your real volume rather than the entry number.

Pricing: what you pay as you grow

ManyChat bills on active contacts, the people you message in a month. As of October 2026, Essential is $17 a month for 250 of them, Pro $39 for 2,500, Business $99 for 7,500 and Advanced $199 for 25,000, and each extra person costs between $0.004 and $0.10 depending on the plan. A month in which a Reel brings 5,000 people into your DMs costs $99 on Business, or $164 on Pro with overage. Our ManyChat pricing guide works this out at several audience sizes.

Chatfuel's Business plan is $18 a month billed yearly ($216 a year), and Chatfuel says plans include unlimited active contacts and unlimited messages, with the AI behind replies under a fair-use allowance; if you go past it, the bot pauses until the limit resets. Keyword replies, button flows and broadcasts do not count toward that allowance. The page does not publish the allowance as a number, so ask Chatfuel what it means at your volume.

The practical difference: ManyChat's bill follows your audience, so a viral month costs more; Chatfuel's bill follows the plan, but heavy AI use can hit a ceiling. For a broader view of the models, see Instagram DM automation pricing.

Compliance: the rules both tools have to follow

Neither platform can outrun the Instagram API. Both are built on Meta's official access, and that access defines what any compliant tool can do. You can only DM someone who interacted with you first, by commenting, replying to a story, or messaging you. You get a 24-hour window after their last message to send a standard message. You get one private reply per comment. Rate limits apply, which is why well-built tools add per-contact cooldowns rather than firing everything at once.

You also need a Professional account, Business or Creator, on any of these tools. And the same warning applies across the whole category: anything that logs into your account or scrapes the app instead of using the official API puts you at risk of action blocks. That risk is not shared by ManyChat or Chatfuel, both of which use official access, but it is worth knowing when you compare either of them against a cheaper unnamed tool.

Because the rules are the same, compliance is not a differentiator between these two. Read the Instagram automation rules once before you design anything, and you will avoid building a flow that the platform will never deliver.

A simpler third option

If neither tool sounds like it fits, the reason is usually that you do not want a platform at all. DMPilot is a deliberately smaller Instagram-only tool: a free plan with no card for up to 100 people a month, then $9 a month or $81 a year, flat, with no per-contact pricing. When someone comments your keyword on a post or Reel, it posts a public reply and sends a DM with your link as a button; it also handles story replies and reactions and keyword DMs, can ask for a follow inside the DM, and gives you tracked links with clicks and click-through rate. The paid plan adds an email ask inside the DM with consent text and one reminder if the link is not tapped. It runs on Meta's official Instagram API through an approved tech provider and sends one link DM per person, per automation, per day.

It is important to be plain about what it does not do, because those gaps are exactly the things ManyChat and Chatfuel are good at. DMPilot has no visual flow builder, no WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, no multi-account agency workspaces and no product carousels, and every automated message is text you write yourself. If you need branching conversations, several channels, or client workspaces, DMPilot is the wrong tool and one of the two platforms above is the right one.

Where it fits is the common case that platforms overserve: one or two automations, a link or a lead magnet to deliver, and a bill that does not move when a post takes off. If that is your situation, see DMPilot compared with ManyChat, ManyChat alternatives, or start free.

Verdict: who should pick which

Pick ManyChat if you want the largest ecosystem in the category, you are building genuinely branching conversations, you want Instagram alongside Messenger, WhatsApp or TikTok, and you are comfortable with a bill that follows the number of people you message. It is the safer default of the two for creators, agencies and marketers who will use the builder properly.

Pick Chatfuel if your conversations are mostly sales: product questions, lead qualification, bookings and WhatsApp campaigns, with AI doing much of the replying. Its orientation means the features will match your work more often, which matters more than any single checkbox.

Pick neither if what you actually want is one reliable Instagram automation at a flat price. Paying for a platform you will not open twice is the most common overspend in this category. Either way, price the exact plan that has the feature you need before you commit, because both vendors move features between tiers more often than comparison articles get updated.

Frequently asked questions

Is ManyChat or Chatfuel better for Instagram?

ManyChat, for most Instagram-first accounts: it has a wide set of Instagram triggers, the larger template ecosystem and a visual flow builder. Chatfuel is the better fit if you sell across WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook and want AI to handle the conversation.

Which is cheaper, ManyChat or Chatfuel?

It depends on volume. As of October 2026, ManyChat's paid plans start at $17 a month ($14 billed yearly) for 250 active contacts and rise as you message more people, while Chatfuel Business is $18 a month billed yearly with unlimited active contacts. ManyChat also has a free plan for 25 active contacts a month.

Do ManyChat and Chatfuel both support WhatsApp?

Yes. Chatfuel is built around WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook. ManyChat supports WhatsApp among other channels, with the number of channels you can connect depending on your plan.

Can either tool DM people who have not messaged me?

No. Instagram only allows a DM to someone who interacted with you first by commenting, replying to a story, or messaging you, and only within a 24-hour window after that interaction. That limit applies to every compliant tool.

Do I need a business Instagram account for ManyChat or Chatfuel?

Yes. Both require a Professional Instagram account, either Business or Creator, because the official Instagram API is only available to Professional accounts.

Is there a simpler alternative to both?

Yes, if you only need Instagram comment-to-DM, story replies and keyword DMs. DMPilot is free for up to 100 people a month, then $9 a month flat with no per-contact pricing, but it has no visual flow builder, no WhatsApp or Messenger and no agency workspaces.

Can I switch from Chatfuel to ManyChat later?

You can, but flows do not transfer between platforms, so you rebuild them. That rebuild cost is a good reason to test your main automation on a free plan or trial before you commit either way.
