ManyChat free plan limits

As of October 2026, ManyChat's Free plan costs $0 and covers 25 active contacts a month (each person ManyChat messages in that month), two channels, one user and up to four live automations, with ManyChat branding. Free has no paid overage, so a post that brings more than 25 people into your DMs in a month needs a paid plan: Essential at $17 a month ($14 billed yearly) for 250 active contacts, or Pro at $39 ($29) for 2,500. Both come with a 14-day free trial.

What does the ManyChat free plan actually give you?

The free plan is a real working account rather than a demo. You can connect an Instagram professional account, build automations in the flow builder, and send DMs triggered by comments, story replies and incoming messages. People who reply to those DMs land in your inbox and you can answer them by hand. For a creator testing whether comment-to-DM changes anything about their week, that is enough to get a genuine answer before any money changes hands.

What you do not get is room. On 9 October 2026 ManyChat's pricing page listed the Free plan at 25 active contacts a month, two channels, one user, up to four live automations and ManyChat branding, with no option to pay for extra active contacts. Treat it as a way to validate the workflow, not a plan you build a business on. ManyChat sets prices by billing country, so check the page from your own account before you plan around it.

How does the 25 active contact cap work?

ManyChat counts active contacts: real people you interact with during a monthly billing period, through automations, AI, broadcasts or the inbox. Someone comments your keyword and receives a DM: that is one active contact for the month. The same person replying three more times is still one. The count starts again the next month, so the cap measures how many people you talk to in a month, not the size of your audience.

That makes 25 small for anything that works. A post that draws 60 keyword comments in a week uses the month's allowance more than twice over, while a quiet month with a dozen conversations fits comfortably. Divide 25 by the comments a good post of yours draws, and you have a more useful number than the cap: if the answer is below one, the Free plan cannot carry a post that works.

Which features are held back for paid plans?

The feature gate is the second half of the limit, and for some accounts it bites before the contact cap does. Four live automations means a keyword on one post, a story reply automation and a couple of DM keywords, and nothing more running at the same time. One user means nobody else can share the inbox.

As of October 2026, Essential ($17 a month) lifts the automation limit and adds a second user, and Pro ($39) adds a third channel, a third user, broadcasting and Manychat AI. The practical test is to write down the automations you intend to run and check each against the Free column. If any needs a paid feature, the free plan is a trial for you rather than a plan.

  • Active contacts: 25 a month, with no paid overage on Free
  • Live automations: up to four at a time
  • Branding: ManyChat branding on the Free plan
  • Channels and seats: two channels and one user
  • Broadcasting and Manychat AI: listed from Pro upward

When do you hit the wall, and what happens then?

You hit the wall in one of two ways. Either more than 25 people need a DM in the same month, or you try to run a fifth automation or a paid feature. The contact wall is the more disruptive of the two because it arrives with traffic, and usually at the worst moment, which is the middle of a post performing better than anything you have published in months.

Free has no option to pay for extra active contacts, so the 25 is a ceiling rather than a starting point, and the answer ManyChat offers is a paid plan. Upgrade before a post you expect to do well, not during it. A person who commented your keyword and got nothing sees silence, and the private reply rule gives you one reply per comment within seven days, so a missed comment cannot be answered later. Because the count resets each month, an account that only rarely passes 25 can also simply wait for the next one.

What are the upgrade paths from the free plan?

The first path is a paid ManyChat plan. As of October 2026, Essential is $17 a month ($14 billed yearly) for 250 active contacts, with $0.10 for each extra one, and Pro is $39 ($29 billed yearly) for 2,500, with $0.05 for each extra. Because the bill follows the people you message each month, a month in which a post takes off costs more: 5,000 people in one month is $164 on Pro, or $99 if you move to Business. That is the right path if you need what ManyChat is good at: a strong visual flow builder, multiple channels and team features. The plan-by-plan arithmetic is in our ManyChat pricing breakdown.

The second path is sideways rather than up. If the only thing you use is a comment trigger sending a DM with a link, the flow builder and the extra channels are capability you pay to keep rather than to use. A flat-rate single-channel tool covers that workflow at a fixed price, and the ManyChat alternatives page compares the options, including where ManyChat remains the better answer. The third path is staying free deliberately, which works for accounts that message 25 or fewer people a month with four automations or fewer.

Which alternatives offer a free trial instead of a free tier?

A free tier and a free trial solve different problems. A free tier lets you run indefinitely at low volume with features removed. A trial gives you the whole product for a fixed period and then asks for a decision. If your question is whether automation works for your audience at all, a trial answers faster, because nothing is missing from the test and you are measuring the real product against real traffic rather than a reduced version of it.

ManyChat itself offers a 14-day trial of Essential and Pro alongside the Free plan. DMPilot also has a free plan with no card: up to 100 people a month (each person counts once a month, against ManyChat's 25) and up to 3 live automations. Pro is $9 a month flat or $81 a year, with no cap on people or automations at any volume. It covers comment-to-DM, story reply-to-DM, keyword DM triggers, tracked links with click-through rates and link buttons on both plans, with email capture inside the thread on Pro, on Meta's official Instagram API through an approved tech provider. It has no flow builder and no WhatsApp, so it is narrower by design. For a wider survey, see free Instagram DM automation tools.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ManyChat free plan really free forever?

Yes. As of October 2026 it is a permanent $0 plan rather than a trial, capped at 25 active contacts a month, two channels, one user and up to four live automations, with ManyChat branding.

What is the contact limit on the ManyChat free plan?

25 active contacts a month, as of October 2026. An active contact is a person ManyChat messages or hears from during the monthly billing period, counted once however many messages you exchange, and the count restarts every month.

What happens when I reach the ManyChat free plan limit?

Free has no option to pay for extra active contacts, so going past 25 people in a month means moving to a paid plan; Essential, at $17 a month or $14 billed yearly, covers 250. Upgrade before a busy post, because a comment that gets no DM within seven days cannot get one later.

Does the ManyChat free plan show ManyChat branding?

Yes. ManyChat's pricing page lists ManyChat branding on the Free plan, as of October 2026. If that matters to you, check the paid plan you are considering.

Do I need a credit card for the ManyChat free plan?

No card is needed to use the free tier itself. You only enter payment details when you upgrade to a paid plan or buy an add-on.

Is there a cheaper option than upgrading to ManyChat Pro?

Within ManyChat, Essential is the cheaper step: $17 a month ($14 billed yearly) for 250 active contacts, as of October 2026. If you only run comment-to-DM, story replies and keyword triggers on Instagram, a flat-rate tool costs less again: DMPilot is free for up to 100 people a month with no card, then $9 a month or $81 a year.
